Why does the fan not shut off when the light goes on and off on a ceiling fan?

Four possibilities: 1. Look for a Turn Switch or a Pull-Chain hanging from the fan - if there is one try turning the switch or pulling the chain! 2. A faulty Turn Switch or Pull-Chain Switch near bottom of the fan 3. The switch at the fan has a missing pull chain or string? 4. A faulty wall switch?

If nothing is found, someone has hard-wired the fan to keep it on all the time. This would be extremely unusual!

I am guessing your pull chain broke the last time you turned it on, so here is what I would do in that case. Get yourself another piece of pull chain or even the broken piece you have left over, find a ball chain coupling and reattach it to the loose piece of chain. Turn off the circuit breaker feeding the fan. You`ll know you have the right one when the fan stops. Remove the cover with the hole that the chain went through, attach the coupling and the new piece of chain. Feed the chain through the hole it goes through and reattach the cover. Turn on the breaker and it`s fixed.

some fans do, but most fans have a timer built into them, this is designed to remove excess moisture and air after use, they all have a dial inside to adjust them time that they can run after the light is switched off and this varies alot depending on the manufacturer, in my experience most switch off after 15 minutes as standard.

You can get it adjusted so that it switches off with the lights, but this requires some level of adjustment to the wiring and should be undertaken by a qualified electrician.

It is the standard now that a fan switch is fitted to isolate the fan indipendantly, so you should have a switch labelled fan (normally beside or above the door), where you can manually switch the fan off (regardless of whether the lights are on or off).
