Why hasn't the sun died yet?

It does! The sun bombards us with radiation that, thanks to our atmosphere, doesn't kill us immediately....but it does adversely affect our health whilst at the same time supporting our very existence!

The sun is can be considered to be in a constant state of explosion. It's so massive that the gravity it generates contains the explosion to it's current size. On the other hand, it's the very mass of the sun that generates the pressure and heat required for the nuclear fusion.

The sun is currently in the "main sequence" phase of its life cycle, where it fuses hydrogen into helium. This phase is expected to last for about another 5 billion years. After that, the sun will enter the red giant phase and eventually shed its outer layers, becoming a white dwarf.
