This is (relatively) common amongst people who have ingested benzodiazapines (alprazolam, diazepam, although these are anxiolytic not hypnotic drugs like ambien) or 'z'-drugs. The desired effect of sedation is usually replaced by excitatory feelings such as loss of inhibition, restlessness and mild euphoria. This is probably due to the effect of GABA binding to BZ receptors in the brain. Changing the dosage may help. Also take into account confounding factors including any other prescription medications you might be taking: ssri's (prozac), weight-loss drugs (xenical, reductil), sndri's (wellbutrin/zyban), besides caffeine (long half-life), alcohol or nicotine.
