Why is Grand Canyon famous?

the Grand Canyon is the only thing in the world that was carved by water erosion.

* Its considered a natural wonder of the world mostly because of its natural features. It represents one of the most complete geological histories of the world.
We don't have anything like it anywhere else in the US, and i dare say anywhere else.
I don't think there is a definitive answer to why Americans may be proud , but that it is so awe inspiring could be one.

Because it is a wonderous sight to behold and mandates more then a quick glimpse from the south rim or a flyover to be appreciated. Those that hold it dear to their hearts have run the rapids, hiked in and out and enjoyed time in exporation.

The people of the United States intentionally decided to forbid major development around this natural wonder, even though such development would have been logistically easy and economically useful to SOME. Compare this with what happened to Niagara falls, where a Ripley's Museum exists less than half a kilometer from the overlooks.

This setting aside of certain natural wonders for permanent protection from destruction by commercial interests, as well as relatively inexpensive access for all, has been called, "America's best idea."
