It has a gene that codes for an RNA copying enzyme that operates rapidly but makes lots of mistakes, causing an unusually high mutation rate. Although this produces many nonfunctional defective viruses, it gives HIV an advantage in always presenting different antigens to the immune system making it nearly impossible for the immune system to produce antibodies that are effective against the population of viruses at any one time.
