Why is aurora only at night?

An Aurora Australis or an Aurora Borealis occurs when streams of particles from the sun's solar winds hit the earth's atmosphere at an angle (as can only happen at the poles). These particles interact with the edges of the earth's magnetic field and when they collide with the gases in the ionosphere, the particles glow creating curtains of blue, green and magenta. An aurora is sometimes accompanied by a crackling sound.

the reason aurora appears at e poles is beccause the magnetic field that covers our planet is weaker at the poles so it lets more gama rays and infared rays in and that's what you see in 20,000 years when the poles switch the aurora will be everywhere

Yes, the region in which the northern lights are visible is centered on the magnetic north pole (not the rotational axis' North Pole!) with a diameter that depends on solar activity and the conditions in the upper atmosphere, the Northern Lights can be seen further south in North America than in Europe but generally the further north the more obvious the lights become.
