Only plant cells have a cell wall and it is important because it keeps the shape of the cell and protects against foreign substances from entering into the cell. Both animal and plant cells have cell membranes, but only the plant cell contains a cell wall.

Cell membranes in cells allow some substances which are soluble in water, such as mineral ions, glucose and amino acids, to pass in and out the cell, whilst protecting it and limiting the escape of larger molecules such as carbohydrates and proteins.
