Alternate answer: It is possible the person asking the question was speaking of limited water in the context of fresh water and the forecasts of severe shortages as time goes on and population continues to rise. If so it is because water is a limited resource. It is true it is renewable but just as is the case with lumber, if you use wood at a faster rate than you can grow trees you will eventually run out. Such is the case with fresh water. There are many things people can do to alleviate water shortages such as the numerous ways of conservation. There is also the ability to desalinate ocean water but the cost and then logistical problems of getting it where it is needed come into play. Water isn't a guarantee either. As we continue to warm our planet weather patterns are changing and area that were once wet and fertile may become arid. Water is 2 hydrogen atoms combined with 1 oxygen atom. The scientific law of conservation tells us matter can not be destroyed, just changed. It is not impossible to coceive of an atmosphere that is no longer conducive to the formation of water molecules and if that occurs we are screwed!
