A pole is a uniform body and so its center of gravity is somewhere in the middle. By keeping the pole vertical you are keeping the center of gravity at the highest position( relative to the hand)- this is unstable equilibrium. Hence the pole will tend to achieve stable equilibrium( ie. to fall flat to the ground).

Remember- higher the center of gravity, more unstable
