Why is it warmer at the equator than at the north pole?

The equator receives much more direct radiation, meaning it has less of the atmosphere to travel through before reaching the surface. Even though the sun can shine for 24 hours in the summer at the poles, it barely rises above the horizon. This means very little radiation actually makes it to the surface at the poles.

It is hotter at the equator than in the north pole because the sun's heat is concentrated directly overhead at the equator, because of the angle the suns rays hit this region. The higher the sun in the sky (angle) the warmer it is. In the North pole the suns rays 'bounce' off the region as the angle is much shallower and so far less heat is the result, and its is much colder as a result.

You can see the effect of this by using a torch/flashlight.

If you shine it at a wall holding it square on to the wall the light forms a small circle and is very bright.

Now if you slowly tilt the torch you will see the area of light gets bigger and bigger and less intense. The same applies with the light and heat from the sun. It is more nearly square on at the equator, less so at the poles
