Actually he isn't hard to observe at all. At some times you see him as a bright star in the west, after sunset, at others in the east, before sunrise. Not quite as bright as Venus or Jupiter for example, but usually still outstanding from his surroundings. If you watch for movement, it will soon become quite clear that you are dealing with a planet. (For example, at times this "star" will be higher in the sky every evening at the same time; while normal stars, in the west, are lower in the sky if you observe every day at the same time.)

Why is atmosphere absent in mercury?

Mercury has very high temperatures and is made up of hard rock. We are like a newborn baby - our planet can't resist such high temperatures, and that is why we have an atmosphere. Mercury can resist all that from the sun.

Why is mercury so hard to observe?

It closeness to the sun makes viewing Mercury very difficult, it appears close to the sun in the sky from earth and the glare of the sun comes into play. Its also small, the smallest of the eight planets and we can only see a reduced portion of its surface usually as it orbits insides earths orbit. We see it from the side, with half of it illuminated when it is at the best angle relative to the sun and Earth for viewing.

Why is it so hard for astronemers to learn about mercury?

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, and MUCH closer to the SUN than the Earth so whenever we (astronomers or anyone from Earth) observe Mercury, we are looking almost directly at the Sun. Even when the Sun is not behind Mercury (from our perspective), we are still looking through all the light, radiation, and electromagnetic interference between the Earth and Mercury. This makes observing Mercury very hard, even with the latest in technology, because the interference is intense due to Mercury's close proximity to the Sun. The only way to get accurate readings (free from the Sun's interference) is to put a satellite in orbit around Mercury. This was finally accomplished in 2011 when the MESSENGER satellite began mapping the surface of Mercury.
