As a stylist (or potential stylist) the ph scale is very important.
The main difference between a professional product (i.e. shampoo etc) will be the pH. professional products are acid balanced. Why is this important? You want to keep the clients hair&scalp as close to possible to the acid mantle (the natural, healthy pH level for hair&scalp which ranges from 4.5-5.5) If you do not understand the pH Scale this will be lost on you.
You need to understand pH and its effects on hair & scalp.This means knowing which products have high and which products have low pH values. When doing a chemical service such as color- you leave the cuticle scales exposed and in an alkaline state. You should know which products to use to bring it back to an acid state in order for the cuticles to close.
When recommending retail and home care this also plays a huge role. Having happy clients with healthy hair greatly relies on your knowledge of which product to use when and this, in turn, is regulated by the pH of the product.
