Red granite was adopted as the state rock after the Kenosha Gem and Mineral Society proposed choosing a mineral/rock to promote geological awareness.

Red granite was chosen as the state rock (galena as the mineral) because of its economic value and abundance.

An igneous rock made up of quartz and feldspar, which accounts for the reddish or pinkish coloring, it's mined in several sections of the state. Granite is hard and relatively cheap compared to quartz, making for a good kitchen counter. In parts of Wisconsin, such as the Wausau area, extensive weathering has made it prone to grumble and makes it useful for roads and driveways. It's the feldspar, that holds the granite together, that weakens into a clay and falls apart. Such exposed rock is often called "rotten granite."

Granite intruded from the earth's crust throughout geologic periods, and comes in huge masses or with batholiths that are often associated with mountain ranges, all of which makes granite interesting to study, along with the unique minerals associated with it. In the Midwest, granite crystallized from magma intrusion believed to date 1.45 billion to 1.75 billion years ago (sources vary). In Wisconsin, this intrusion was relatively shallow and exposed to weathering. Among the intrusions in the state are the Wausau pluton and the Wolf River Batholith. Cambrian sandstone and glaciation helped protect some of the granite (such as Rib Mountain) from weathering.

Historically, mining was important to the state. A miner shares space with a sailor on the state seal. Miners first came to Wisconsin (which became a state in 1848) in the 1820s because of a lead mining boom. The state animal, the badger, is a reference to early miners who dug shelters into the ground like a badger.

What is the difference between red granite and granite?

The composition changes the appearance and colour of the granite. A granite that appears more red in colour will have more of the mineral orthoclase feldspar, whereas the lighter and more white in appearance will have less orthoclase and maybe more plagioclase feldspar and quartz in the composition.

What is the difference between red bluff granite and thunderbird rhyolite?

Red Bluff granite and Thunderbird rhyolite are both igneous rocks but differ in composition and formation. Red Bluff granite is a coarse-grained, light-colored rock primarily composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica, typically formed through the slow crystallization of magma beneath the Earth's surface. In contrast, Thunderbird rhyolite is a fine-grained volcanic rock rich in silica, formed from the rapid cooling of lava at or near the surface, often characterized by its lighter color and presence of glassy textures. These differences in origin and mineral content result in distinct physical properties and uses for each rock type.

Is Typhoon Bordeaux actually granite or is it just similar to granite?

Typhoon Bordeaux is a granite. It is quarried in Brazil.

What is the red colored rock found in Arizona called?

The red colored rock found in Arizona is called sandstone. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand-sized mineral particles and is known for its distinctive red hue due to the presence of iron oxide. It is a common rock type found throughout the state, particularly in areas such as Sedona and the Grand Canyon.

What is red and eats rocks?
