The size of the capillary is smaller than the red blood cells. The exact reason for this is not known. The red blood cells get folded when they pass through the capillaries. This phenomena buy time for the blood to flow through the capillaries, probably. Secondly it will create larger surface area of total number of capillaries to flow the same amount of blood. You have better exchange of gases through larger surface area.

Why alveoli in the lungs have large surface area and many blood capillaries surrounding the?

The alveoli provide large surface area for the exchange of gases between the blood and the air. Each alvoeli is surrounded by many capillaries(tiny blood vessels). The very thin walls and large surface area of the alveoli and numerous capillaries surrounding them enable gases to be exchanged quickly and efficiently. Oxygen in the inhaled air diffuses from the alveoli to the blood in the capillaries. The blook then carries the oxygen to the cells in the other parts of the body. The waste product of respiration, CO2 , diffuses from the blood to the lungs through the capillaries surrounding alveoli. It leaves the body through bronchi and trachea when you exhale( breathe out).

What are alveoli surrounded by?

the blood surround Alveoli in order to gas exchange between the Alveoli and red blood cell.

What sort of blood vessels are surrounding the air sacs in your lungs?

Capillaries are the blood vessels that surround the alveoli, or air sacs, in your lungs. These capillaries are the site of gas exchange.

What are Blood capillaries surrounded by?

Blood capillaries are surrounded by a layer called the basement membrane, which provides structural support and acts as a barrier between the capillaries and surrounding tissues. Pericytes, contractile cells that regulate blood flow and vessel stability, may also be found surrounding blood capillaries.
