Organisms aren't equally distributed throughout the biosphere because more life is found around other things that are living. For example, you'd find more bugs on a tree than in the sand. This is because in general, living things need other living things to survive. The bugs will eat the tree and things living on the tree.

Life tends to accumulate where there are fertile areas that can be depended on for crops and animals, and some of the extremes, such as the North and South Pole, and the Sahara Desert, to name just three, tend to not support these things. That is not to say that there is no life in these extreme biomes, but life there is certainly thin and, as needed, well adapted to the extremes.
