It's simple. The steeper the slope is, the more gravitational potential energy is acting on the loose soil. i.e. On a steeper slope, less ground is supporting the weight of the material, which encourages the material to fall.

Try this at home: get a (flat) plate and put a mound of soil onto it. Keep on tilting the plate upwards (from the initial horizontal position). The soil will not fall at the start, but as the gradient increases, more soil will fall (the soil being a landslide).

Water (from rain or an underground spring) will also encourage a landslide because it adds weight to the soil and can act as a lubricant, loosening the particles.

How did Frank Slide happen?

The Frank Slide occurred in April 1903 in Alberta, Canada, when a large section of limestone rock broke off the summit of Turtle Mountain and slid down into the valley below, covering the town of Frank. The slide was likely triggered by a combination of factors, including coal mining activities weakening the rock structure and heavy rainfall saturating the mountain, causing it to become unstable. The event remains one of the deadliest rock slides in Canadian history.

Which of the objectives comes closest to a specimen and is most likely to break a slide if proper precautions are not taken?

The oil immersion objective comes closest to the specimen and is most likely to break a slide if proper precautions are not taken. Oil immersion objectives require the addition of immersion oil between the objective lens and the slide to improve resolution, and without the correct amount of oil or if the slide is not handled carefully, it can lead to damage or breakage of the slide.

How do you prepare a canine ear exudate cytology slide?

Using a sterile cotton swab, gently remove some of the exudate from the dog's ear. Place the exudate on a glass microscope slide and, pressing firmly, smear the exudate across the slide. Use an open flame source (hand-held flick-style cigarette lighters work well) and gently head the underside of the slide to attach the exudate to the slide. Stain the slide with standard Gram stain following the manufacturer's directions. Rinse the slide gentle with tap water and then place on the microscope for viewing.

Why are trees normally cone shaped and have sloping branches in mountain regions?

Trees in mountain regions are cone-shaped and have sloping branches to withstand heavy snowfall. The cone shape helps trees shed snow more easily, preventing branches from breaking under the weight. The sloping branches also aid in shedding snow and reducing the chance of damage from avalanches or heavy snow loads.
