There is a distance, called the Roche limit, at which tidal forces on a moon will exceed the tensile strength of the material the moon is made of, at which point the moon will break into smaller pieces. The Roche limit has nothing to do with the size of the original orbit, other than the fact that the original orbit cannot be inside the Roche limit (or the moon would never have formed in the first place).
