Oil results as a process of decomposition of plant and animal matter. Obviously, humans have used fossil fuels, coal, natural gas and oil for centuries. So for us, these fuels have served a purpose.

But, beyond the human population, there isn't a real need for oil or related fossil fuels. Many minerals are extracted from our earth because we need them, like gold or other precious metals, which otherwise are of little or no value that we know for nature.
