One 3-way dimmer switch, one regular 3-way switch and one 4-way switch. The 4-way is wired between the two pairs of travelers from the other two switches. The common on the dimmer is tied to either the light or to the branch hot and the common on the other 3-way is tied to whichever is left (hot or the light).
To install a dimmer switch for lights controlled from three locations (also known as a three-way dimmer), first, turn off the power at the circuit breaker. Use a three-way dimmer switch compatible with your existing three-way switches, and then connect the dimmer to the common terminal and traveler wires from the other switches according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure all connections are secure, attach the switch to the electrical box, then reinstall the other switches. Finally, turn the power back on and test the dimmer functionality from all locations.
Well, they sell 3-way compact fluorescent bulbs, but they're quite a bit more expensive; up to 20 dollars a bulb!...Harder to find as well, since many people (myself included) debate whether the purchase is worth it. I've made the switch w/ all but my three-way lamp. Anyway, using a one-way cf bulb will pose the same problems as using an incandescent one-way as far as electrical fire hazards. Hope that helps!See the answer to the Related Question by clicking the link shown below.
Compact florescent do not dim. They are all or nothing. You can use them where you have a dimmer switch. They will come on from about half way to full on. Dimmer switches don't like them and the switch will burn out faster.

To properly wire a 2-way dimmer switch in your home, first turn off the power to the circuit at the breaker box. Remove the existing switch and connect the dimmer switch's wires to the corresponding wires in the wall. Typically, this involves connecting the black dimmer wire to the hot wire, the green wire to the ground wire, and the red or white wire to the load wire. Secure the connections with wire nuts and mount the dimmer switch in the wall box. Turn the power back on and test the dimmer switch to ensure it is working properly.
