Many people who work office jobs long to spend their days outside, but are not sure exactly how to go about doing so. While there are plenty of positions that allow one to work outside, such as landscaping and other types of manual labor, the white-collar professional is limited in what he or she may do when it comes to working outside. One option for transitioning out of the office world is to get involved working for a courier service. Couriers spend the majority of their time in transit, which keeps them in shape, outside and in the sun.

Today’s courier jobs are much different than the courier job’s of yesterday. Historically, couriers usually rode bikes around major metropolitan areas and delivered small packages between businesses and customers. Some couriers were in charge only of delivering messages to clients. While courier services still employ bikers and on-foot delivery people, the business has transitioned mainly to motor vehicles, which has opened up the ability to deliver among much larger areas.

Couriers often work hard hours, sometimes starting work as early as 4 am and working throughout the evening. This can be very taxing for some people, but for the right person it can be very rewarding work. Couriers tend to make more money the more they work, which translates to a set your own income style of work not unlike inside and outside sales positions. While courier work can often involve heavy lifting, the bulk of the work is interacting with customers and traveling.

Depending upon where you live, you will either have a very easy time finding a courier job or a rather difficult one. Courier work tends to be heavily focused on areas with dense populations and many businesses, such as large cities. If you are adamant about finding a job as a courier, it may do you well to move to a metropolitan area. After that, just show the courier service that you are hard working and dedicated and you’ll be on your way to a lasting career path.
