The printing press was invented before the typewriter. Johannes Gutenberg developed the printing press around 1440, while the typewriter was invented by Christopher Sholes in 1867.
Johann Gutenberg's main accomplishment was being the inventor of the mechanical-type printing press during the Middle Ages. With this invention, the mass production of books was possible. Prior to the printing press, the reproduction of books or manuscripts was through handwritten methods. He was born in 1395 and died in 1468.
Gutenberg's metal alloy, a mix of lead, tin, and antimony, was specially designed for durability and ease of casting in his movable type printing press. This alloy allowed for precise and consistent reproduction of characters, contributing to the success of the printing press in mass-producing books.
