Civil War in the 1860's is when the first pictures were used in newspapers. Photos weren't used because the ability to transfer to paper wasn't around, but they did havestandardized drawings that were used. They would use a standard male or female body and then add a drawing of the person's head/face to the body. Ads were in the newspapers of the time as well that featured items, clothing, hats, and toys. Again, all of these things were drawn pictures. The first photos of the a war was also done in the civil war by William Brady. He posed bodies in battlefields, followed troops, took photos of camps, and of Lincoln. I think you could say he was the first of his kind in photojournalism. His pictures of the war changed people's view of war as from something glorious to the gritty look of what real war looked like. The first war to be shown on nightly TV was during the Viet Nam war when newsmen like Dan Rather, Walter Cronkite, and others went into the jungles of Viet Nam and followed the troops on patrol. This, too, changed the general view of war and lead to the protests of the 1960's against the war.
