He started writing short stories while studying at Columbia University. His first short story published appeared in Story magazine in the March-April 1940 issue. In 1941 he began submitting stories to The New Yorker magazine. They rejected him seven times before publishing him. He wrote his most famous work, The Catcher in the Rye, in 1951.
