You probably wouldn't know how to read because you wouldn't need to--books were hand-copied and so expensive only churches bought them. Religion would be different as the holy bible could not be a book.
For professional looking business cards a printing press would be an ideal choice. Most printing presses accept orders for a minimum of 250 business cards.
I would venture two guesses: 1) it would be too hard to roll it through the printing presses at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and 2) it would disintegrate in the washer when we forgot to take it out of our pockets before laundry day. :-)
