Composting takes: greens (fresh vegetable matter), browns (dead and dry vegetable matter), air and water.

Paper is a brown. I suggest shredding it with a shredder, but you don't have to. The smaller the pieces are, the faster they'll break down.

In your pile put 1 part green to 2 parts brown, enough moisture so it is damp (not soaking wet), and stir it to incorporate air. It doesn't hurt to throw a little tiny bit of dirt in, too.
