When it is practiced responsibly, it isn't. However, too often, as is the case with a variety of human behaviors, some take advantage and misuse the law, and use it as a shield to hide behind.

When anything in print or other media us used to harm another, for what ever reason, this is a misuse of freedom of the press. When a writer publishes what they choose with no consideration of facts, this is a misuse of the press. When reporters, writers, journalists, editors, publishers, and all those who lie between words on paper and the dissemination of those words to the public have little to no accountability for what they produce, the freedom of the press is misused.
