The owner of a say Channel 9 is James Packer, who owns the media is whoever has bought it, like a boss, who also controls the what goes on that media.

ADDITIONAL: No one person or group owns ALL the media worldwide. In fact the term "The Media" is a vast and all-encompassing one which broadly covers ALL printed matter, including books, newspapers magazines, pamphlets, etc - all audible (i.e.: radio) - all visual (i.e.: TV, movies, internet, photographs, etc) - advertising - etc - etc - etc - in short - everything with which we come in contact every day of our lives. Exept for the ones owned and operated by the government in certain nations, all these outlets are usually privately owned, with few exceptions, by by stock issuing corporations.

The Media is very powerful. In fact it is so powerful that it can destroy the world with a single blow of it's nose. Have you every seen Transformers: Dark Side Of The Moon? Well, you know that giant robotic worm that goes through the buildings? Media could destroy that while sitting down drinking a cup of tea and reading a newspaper by the fire. Sounds powerful, doesn't it? This is because it is. Nearly everyone that reads news papers or watches the TV will be influenced by the media, albeit if it is a dodgy sports story of a professional footballer missing a sitter, etc. So, as you can see, media is very powerful. It controls what we see and know. Now, next time you read the newspaper, don't just accept what it says, think a little.

But you don't have to you know - I find it a lot easier to accept it and just get on with life.

Major media in the United States has a diverse ownership and thus a diverse number of people and organizations that control it. The same holds true for "minor" media . As an example, Rupert Murdoch, through his corporation, the News Corporation, controls a large segment of major USA media. This is due to his ownership of major newspapers and TV stations. Other "owners" are publicly held corporations such as CBS and NBC. In certain situations such as MSNBC its a joint ownership of Microsoft and NBC. At any point in time, any publicly owned media organization can be bought by another corporation. For a time, the American Broadcasting Network was "independent" in a manner of speaking. Now its part of Disney which is also a publicly held corporation.

Aside from privately owned media, there is a large number of so-called Public TV & radio stations. These depend on government & private citizen funding.
