What is the value of a 1948 vol 1 no 1 issue of hot rod magazine?

If it is the actual original and not one of the two reprints in good condition it is worth between $1,200. and $1,600. or more in better condition.

If it has 3 staples and is approx. the size of a piece of printer paper it is a reproduction.

If it has 2 staples and is about 12 1/4" X 9 1/4" (If memory serves me right)

then it is an original. An original sold on ebay in the past few weeks for $1,250.00

I dont really think, a lot, except maybe to a true gear head. There really were no special issues, like other types of magazines. I can remember around 68, or 69, there was an article about the "rent a racer" which was about Hertz Rental co. using Ford Mustangs with a performance package, being for rental use, and people would rent, and race them, or take them home, take out all the good parts, and replace with stock stuff. Anyway, that issue might be worth a bunch to a Mustang nut. Or, other specific issues, but for the most part they go for a couple bucks each, at the swap meets. Might try e-bay?

Everything in the world to a true "gear head", from a financial standpoint, well, I have seen guys out in the sun/rain, wind, or sweat rolling off of them, asking maybe a buck apiece for them, after paying $35.00 for the booth. I don't know if they sold, or got hauled to the nearest garbage can. (Sorry! Recycle bin, I meant!) I have never heard, personally, of any issue being of value. (My Dad would be a millionare!) I guess if a guy looked at one, and got that far off look in his eye as he wanders back through memory lane, you might be able to get $5.00, for that particular issue. Here is the deal. The "unofficial code" of the "common gearhead", reads something like this. The "comradery" clause superseeds the "He is the COMPETITION" clause, ALWAYS! Car guys spend every penny of their meager earnings on their cars. And, a true car guy would sooner tear out the "car" pictures, and post the aricles, tests, Q and A, column, ect. Why? well, once we have looked at acar, not of our own, once, it is old news. The evaluations have been completed. First, any valuable, visual, "tricks", or "tips", for power. Second, we will within a half a second, or so, place this vehicle into an "E.T., catorgory, thus answering the questions: Compeition? A grudge match? Then, place it on an intricate "person interest", and "niceness", scale. Asses a optional, "Am I going to own this car", and if needed, a "when", and "how", option. Allowable assesment time limit? 10, or maybe, 15, seconds, depending on the owners whereabouts, and point of attention. (Any longer, and you may as well be asking to date his girl.) But the tech article......The deal is you hand them down to someone younger, or really interested in the sport, to continue, well, the "roots", which are the spectator, to the professional racer. A true "gear head" is in bliss in a puddle of oil, laying underneath his 67, Camaro, swapping his muncie 4 gear out. That is the "unity" thing. No other "organization" that I have found would have me strip out a 3, or 4 thousand dollar part from my "baby", in the middle of the night, thus disabling it, so I can loan it to the guy that just beat me, so he can blow it up, on the final pass, getting a trophy, and a check for $250.00, and cheer him on all the time, thus feeling a sense of accomplishment through "his" victory.
