Ida Tarbell wrote a 19-part series published in S.S. McClure's Magazine from 1902 to 1904, exposing the unfair tactics used by Standard Oil, the huge oil producer, refiner and sales "trust" developed by John D. Rockefeller. Tarbell published the series as a book as well. The series and book were widely read and caused public outrage, leading to federal investigations of Standard Oil's operations and eventually to its break-up into smaller companies in 1911 under the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. Because of Standard Oil's huge size, Rockefeller could cut prices below cost to drive independent sellers out of business and then raise them once he had a monopoly in a particular market. He strong-armed low rates from the railroad and shipping companies who transported his product, and used that economic power to drive independent drillers and refiners out of business. He could outpay others trying to purchase pipelines and other crucial resources because Standard Oil could easily absorb a small temporary loss if it would help monopolize the market and thereby bring future gain.
