Exposition is usually used to establish the setting within which the story takes place. In other types of fiction the setting is usually well known. For example, in a Western, the potential threat from "Injuns," the negative feelings of some whites ("the only good one is a dead one") , the function of the town marshal and the salloon keeper, the character of the cowboy, etc., are understood by all readers and require no explanation. In Science Fiction, the setting is less familiar or not familiar at all and must be more clearly explained. While better works integrate much of this into presentation of the story, some rely on more legnthy exposition (description/explanation by author/narrator directly to reader) to serve this function. Older works of science fiction were especially noteworthy for their extended use of exposition, both at the beginning and later, in part because more of the authors were learning to write, and in part because much of the readership were technically oriented young boys and tollerated, or even preferred, this style.

Is science fiction and fiction the same thing?

No. Fiction is basically a story that isn't true. It can be sci-fi with unreal things like vampires, werewolves, or a neon blue hamster that speaks 13 different languages, including French and German. Since none of this can be scientifically proven (yet) they're fiction but also sci-fi.

What makes the novel and movie Divergent science fiction?

The novel "Divergent" by Veronica Roth is science fiction, or more precisely speculative fiction, because it is set in the future and contains speculations about future changes in human civilization. Science fiction does not always have an obvious connection to science as such. Any fiction set in the future will be considered to be a type of science fiction, whether it directly addresses the issue of future scientific developments or not. This is a bit sloppy, which is one of the reasons why the great science fiction writer, Robert A. Heinlein, suggested that we use the term speculative fiction instead. In either case, we get to keep the acronym SF. Not only is it set in the future but there are many serums which are technological advances plus you could tell it is in the future because of the fact there was marsh which is remains of a dried michigan lake.

Life is too short. Unless it is a school assignment, read what you like. You can use Locus Magazine which reviews science fiction books to see if you would be interested in a title. Or you can ask another reader to make a recommendation. Or you could attend a science fiction convention and listen to authors read parts of their books.
