Generic Name: Hyoscine Butylbromide

Brand Name: Buscopan

Classification: Antispasmodic, Muscle Relaxant

Mechanism of Action: Hyoscine works by relaxing the muscle that is found in the walls of the stomach, intestines, bowel, bile duct and urinary tract. Hyoscine stops the spasms in the smooth muscle by preventing acetylcholine from acting on the muscle

Dosage, Route and Frequency: 1 ampule IV now then every 8 hours RTC for pain

Nursing Responsibilities:

1. Raise side rails as precautions

Rationale:Because patient may become temporarily disoriented and drowsy.

2. Reorient patient as needed.

Rationale:Tolerance may develop when therapy is prolonged.

3. Do not administer if the client has abnormal muscle weakness

Rationale:Hyoscine work by relaxing muscle thereby increasing the episodes of weakness to the client.

4. Use cautiously if the patient has very high fever.

Rationale: May promote further increased in the temperature of the client.
