APRN's (advanced practice nurse, or nurse practitioner) can have either a master's degree (MSN) or Doctorate degree (DNP). If they have a master's degree they are referred to by their name. Should they have a Doctoral degree they can legitimately be referred to as Doctor, however in some cases and settings, that Doctoral nurse may allow themselves to be referred to by name so as not to have patients confuse them with Medical Doctors, though that is their personal choice.
