Early ion chamber survey meter instrument designs were based on the JUNO design (basically a box with a handle on top). The earliest design with a pistol grip located under the box (for better ergonomic handling of the instrument) was so unusual that, when presented to technical staff, they replied "look at that cutie pie." The name stuck and all pistol grip design ion chamber survey meters are referred to as "Cutie Pies." By the way, JUNO type designs are still made.
