Silver currently trades at 67p per gram. A one ounce coin is 28.28grams (a troy ounce is 31.1grams). The silver in modern coins is normally sterling silver, which is 925 parts per thousand silver. This works out at a bullion value of £17.50 for just the silver. However coin production costs money. These costs are shared between the production volume. Austrian philharmonic coins are made in larger quantities than royal mint britannias, so are usually cheaper. They get more use out of the moulds etc.

The uk royal mint however do charge a fairly large premium for there coins, and a Britannia with a nice box and a certificate would sell on eBay for almost £50. Philharmonics sell for £30-£32.

Silver versions of currency sell for a little less as the silver content is lower. £1 coins sell for about £15. £2 coins sell for about £20.
