An 1897 nickel is a relatively common date, worth about $3 in worn condition and upwards of $90 in uncirculated condition. One more thing: it's NOT made of silver. US nickels have been made of the same copper-nickel alloy since the coin was first introduced in 1866. The only nickels that actually contain silver are those minted during WWII.
5 cent coins aren't made of silver (except for those minted in 1942-45), unless you're referring to the old half dime, but the mint stopped making those in 1873. An 1897 nickel in circulated condition is worth around $2.50, and over $80 in mint condition.
