Their name for themselves is Tsalagi. As with many English names for tribes, no one is exactly sure where "Cherokee" came from. Maybe is is from Choctaw meaning those who live in the mountains", or another Choctaw word meaning "those who live in the cave country. The Spanish recorded it as Tchalaquei in 1755.
