day of the dead is a spanish holiday, while Halloween is an American holiday. on day of the dead the spanish celebrate and honor the dead, so it is very much like all souls' day. Halloween is when you knock on peoples' doors and ask for candy. I'm pretty sure day of the dead is an official holiday but Halloween is definitely, but unfortunately, not.
