This is one of those situations where a phrase is more a habit or an exclamation, rather than being a description or observation about the situation. Gosh is likely to be a softer euphemism in order to avoid using God's name in vain.

French speakers might be more likely to either say "Mon Dieu" (Fr. for my God) or possibly use one of their favorite exclamations "Alors" which , to my own experience,

about six yrs studying basic French in HS and in college, doesn't have much of a

literal meaning itself, but is more like an adult version of the word WOW.
