There are Nine letters. I have counted you can even observe by looking very closely into a dollar bill right on the bottom of the pyramid says these letters (MDCCLXXVI).

If you look at the bills in your wallet you'll see they have the word ONE in large letters, with the motto "In God We Trust" in smaller letters above.

The motto " In God We Trust " was added to dollar coins in 1866. There was no mintage of 1871 dollars without the motto.
If the coin is dated 1847 and has the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the banner above the eagle on the reverse, it's fake. The motto was added in 1866.

The word ONE in large letters with the motto In God We Trust above it. Some old bills (no longer used) dated 1935-G and all bills dated 1935-F and earlier don't carry the motto. They are NOT errors; the motto wasn't added until late in the 1935 series which was actually printed until 1965 (!).
