copine means both girlfriend, or a friend who is a girl. This is a casual term used by both girls and guys. You have to deduce the meaning from the context. Also, when talking about a girlfriend, a French speaker is likely to add a singular possessive : ma / ta / sa (= my / your / his)
qui est cette fille ? (who's that girl?) - c'est sa copine = his girlfriend;
qui est cette fille ? - c'est une copine à lui, c'est une de ses copines (a friend of his, one of his friends)
feminine
Depends of the context. "Ami" is masculine (the feminine is "amie") and "copine" is feminine (the masculine is "copain"). Both mean "friend", but "ami" means a better friend than "copain". Often, "copain" is used for "petit copain" or "copine" for "petite copine", and then that mean "boyfriend" or "girlfriend".
Ami, Copain -> masculine (to represent a male friend) Amie, Copine -> feminine (to represent a female friend) Copain & Copine can also be used to define a Boyfriend or Girlfriend.
Un copain (meaning a friend, a pal) is masculine. The feminine version is copine (pronoune [kopeen]
