Tom represents greed and selfishness. While he is with his wife, he is hesistant to strike a deal with the Devil because he has to share it with his wife. As soon as his wife is gone, he's very anxious to find the Devil again simply to find a way to convince him to give the treasure away.

Also, by becoming a money lender at the end, he cheats people out of their money. His motivation for doing so is pure greed.
