There are two significant language groups in France and nearby areas. There's the langues d'oïl (the languages of oïl), which are basically throughout the north of the country and includes standard French, and the langues d'oc (languages of oc) which are southern, and include Catalan, in eastern Spain, and Occitan, in southern France.

These names derive from the word for "yes" in their given languages. "Oïl" is the word for "yes" in old French, pronounced nearly the same as and eventually morphed into oui, as can be seen in standard French. In the south, the langues d'oc -- specifically Occitan, where the name for the group originated, the word for yes is "òc."

The name of the southern French province "Languedoc" derives from this language.
