"and sons"
Mon fils means "my son" in English.
"le petit-fils de mon père est mon (fils // neveu)" in French means 'the grandson of my father is my (son // nephew)' in French.
They both mean "my". Mon is followed by a masculine gender noun, ma is followed by a feminine gender noun. Ex: J'aime mon fils, ma mère et ma femme. (I love my son, my mother and my wife) - j'aime mon mari, ma soeur et ma tante (I love my husband, my sister and my aunt). For both froms, the plural is "mes".
If you are trying to say "they" when referring to one female and a male, the pronoun automatically becomes male. So they=ils. Same goes even if there's a group of 20 girls and one guy. French is a very sexist language. :P
