The "hardness" of the "lead" (graphite/clay mixture) is often written on the pencil.
For harder leads (they write lighter and do not need sharpening so often) the numbers will increase and be followed by the letter H
softer leads write darker and need to be sharpened often to maintain a point the numbers will increase and are followed by the letter B
The range is between 9H (hardest) to 9B softest.
