A metaphor is simply an analogy that implies a comparison between two seemingly unrelated things. A simile is a metaphor that uses the words "like" or "as" to draw comparisons.

Common similes/metaphors for "clever" might be:

1) As sharp as a nail

2) sly as a fox

To create your own metaphor, figure out what you're trying to say about the initial subject/item. (What are you trying to say about being clever? That it's good? Bad? etc), figure out what you're comparing it to. Look up synonyms of what you're trying to say and try to find words that would personify the item/subject, then think of something that holds a similar principle and draw a comparison between them.

Example: If you want to describe "clever" in a devious way and relate an extramarital affair to another form of devious night bandit..you would choose a fox and a woman. It is word play also to choose fox since 'fox' also means "attractive woman." Then you choose the word that personifies the none human subject. You would choose "sly."

Answer: "sly as a fox"
