I am from north Leicestershire and have heard this expression - denoting a muddle, mess, confusion - all my life. As in, " I was all confused, me duck - I was in a right puki aki!" / "The bank manager told me my affairs were in a right puki aki!"

I have always supposed it derives from Hindi or Urdu - probably 19th century military slang.
