The story was written when the author was 14 years old. It was first published by Nick Joaquin in thePhilippines Free Pressas "For The Revolution". There, the manuscript was lightly edited, resulting in a confrontation between the angry young author and the sympathetic editor, recounted amusingly by Joaquin in his PEN lecture on up-and-coming Filipino writers. The unedited full story was later published by Francisco Arcellana in his book PEN Philippine Short Stories, and anthologized in several collections afterwards. It is a coming-of-age story about a boy growing up among the revolutionary irregulars in Cavite during the Filipino-American War. Political and lyrical, it tells of young love and ends in horror when the boy participates in the killing of a Spanish priest. A sequel, "Legend", was also published in the Free Press and later in the prestigious American journal, Short Story International.Castillo later became one of the country's foremost fiction writers. His novel The Firewalkers is a return to the fictional Cavite of his boyhood, albeit with a mature voice. Cape Engano, his latest work also contains sequences situated in that time-and-place.
