The original motto of the United States was secular. "E Pluribus Unum" is Latin for "One from many" or "One from many parts." It refers to the welding of a single federal state from a group of individual political units -- originally colonies and now states.

In God We Trust did not become the official U.S. national motto until after the passage of an Act of Congress in 1956 Non sibi sed patriae. Semper Fortis. Honor, Courage, Commitment. There is also a Navy Ethos.
"E Pluribus Unum" was our original motto, but it was changed to "In God We Trust."
