A savanna is a grassy plain with trees growing in it with an open canopy or where the tree tops do not touch. When Oglethorpe named his city in Georgia, Savannah, he was using an alternate spelling. English spelling had not yet been standardized. Parts of the original Savanna can still be seen throughout the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain of the American South. It is used mainly for cattle grazing although much has been turned into farm land. A large patch of it exists south of Kissimmee, Florida.
