Long jokes tend to fall into the category of what's known as a feghoot or a shaggy dog story; they are long and rambling on purpose, to set the listener (or reader) up for an anticlimactic punchline, often involving a pun.
One example of such a joke can be found in the links below.
The longest joke web site is clearly an attempt at defining long as a measurable in linear units (42+ meters). That would of course depend on the font used to render the web page, since a large font could lengthen this measurement considerably. One would have to agree of course that the text of this joke satisfied the definition of the word joke. I am not passing judgment, however I can say that stepping up to this challenge in such a noble and coincidentally humorous fashion is commendable (again barring any negative conclusion based on the actual contents therein). If this font were to say be Courier New or Times Roman and the size could be well anything renderable (perhaps 10,000,000 points) or slightly different wording of the venerable joke or even a different joke of a similar length when measured with words or characters as is more traditionally used as such a measurement, then this would probably be without any doubt the longest joke in the world (until such time as another site came along and chose 10,000,001 points). Whether one could weather the actual reading of such a long joke or sustain perhaps the text to speech version without risking life or livelihood since the time to do so could in theory approach infinity it is possible by this reasoning to conclude that the joke may not be a joke at all by the definition brought to mind by the question "if a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?", for this joke may not ever be complete and therefore the judgment as to its soundness of classification as a joke may be forever in question. If one were to skip to the end assuming your browser could manage a scroll bar thumb of practically infinite units at its culmination one might find at the very end a punch line and be misled into believing that this qualifies it as a joke. Again, not being one to judge I would assert that this may not disprove the classification one is seeking to ascertain but it would also not prove anything in particular as the fullness of joke-ness would be questionable if the content preceding it did not produce the satisfactory suspense normally associated with the preamble to the punchline, or indeed the connectedness of yet another preceding passage and so on and if one was to continue backwards in this manner until reaching the beginning this would most likely be seen by most as being more difficult than the journey from beginning to end and therefore not perhaps the best use of ones time. One would have to agree of course that the text of this joke satisfied the definition of the word joke...
a joke a joke can be cracked a joke can be made a joke can be told a joke can be played
A joke that is not funny would be a joke that no one laughs at. The way to truly discover if a joke is funny, is to tell the joke to see if anyone laughs. However, humor is subjective, one may find it funny, another may not.
The word "joke" comes from the Latin word jocus, meaning the same thing.
To crack a joke is to tell a joke.
know your audience and deliver the joke with confidence
